Recipe Info

  • Category : Side dish
  • Ingredient Category : Processed foods
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : More than 6 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 300g fish cakes (flat or assorted types)
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 stalk green onion
  • 1/3 carrot
  • 1 green chili pepper (optional, for added spiciness)
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

Spicy and Sweet Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp plum extract (for sweetness and shine)
  • 2 Tbsp honey (or corn syrup for deeper sweetness)
  • 1/3 Tbsp red chili paste (for spiciness and umami)
  • 1 tsp red chili powder (for color and heat)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (for added flavor)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the fish cakes and vegetables. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (approximately 3cm x 5cm). Slice the onion thinly, and julienne the carrot. Slice the green onion and green chili pepper diagonally. (Briefly blanching the fish cakes in boiling water can remove impurities and excess oil, resulting in a cleaner and softer texture.)

Step 1

Step 2

Let’s make the secret to its deliciousness: the spicy and sweet sauce. In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp plum extract, 2 Tbsp honey, 1/3 Tbsp red chili paste, 1 tsp red chili powder, 1 tsp soy sauce, and 1 tsp minced garlic. Mix them well.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Be careful not to overheat the oil, as it can burn the fish cakes. Add the prepared fish cakes and stir-fry lightly. Then, add the carrot and onion and continue to stir-fry until the vegetables are slightly softened.

Step 3

Step 4

Reduce the heat to low, then pour in the prepared sauce. Quickly stir-fry to coat the fish cakes evenly with the sauce. Finally, add the green onion and green chili pepper and toss to combine. Turn off the heat, drizzle with 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil, and sprinkle with 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds to finish.

Step 4

Step 5

Tip: Blanching the fish cakes beforehand will allow them to absorb the sauce better, resulting in even softer and more delicious stir-fried fish cakes.

Step 5

Step 6

This recipe offers a mild spiciness that even children can enjoy. If you prefer a spicier kick for adult palates, you can add one chopped green chili pepper for a more robust, truly spicy fish cake stir-fry.

Step 6

Step 7

And just like that, this simple and delicious spicy and sweet stir-fried fish cake is ready! The moist and tender texture is truly wonderful.

Step 7

Step 8

Making a large batch is perfect for storing as a side dish. Keep it refrigerated, and you can enjoy it for several days.
