  • 1 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 0.5 Tbsp sugar
  • A pinch of cinnamon powder (adjust to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the star of our ‘Bread Rusks’ today: the bread crusts or any leftover bread pieces. Even stale bread can be transformed into something delicious with this recipe.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the prepared bread into cubes, about 1.5 cm in size. If they’re too small, they might burn easily during cooking, and if they’re too large, they might not get crispy all the way through. So, aim for a consistent, moderate size.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, it’s time to heat the pan. Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a preheated wok or wide frying pan over medium heat. It’s best to lower the heat to low if the butter starts to brown to prevent burning.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the butter is sufficiently melted, add the cubed bread to the pan and toast until golden brown. Flip the pieces as needed, cooking for about 3-5 minutes until each side is a nice golden brown. This step creates the foundation for our crispy on the outside, soft on the inside bread rusks.

Step 4

Step 5

As soon as the bread is golden brown, transfer it while it’s still hot into a plastic bag (like a zip-top bag). Seasoning the bread while it’s hot helps the sugar melt and coat the bread evenly.

Step 5

Step 6

In the plastic bag, sprinkle 0.5 tablespoons of sugar and the cinnamon powder according to your preference. If you love cinnamon, feel free to add a little more. This is where we add the sweetness and delightful aroma.

Step 6

Step 7

Seal the bag tightly, then hold it and shake gently. The heat from the bread will help melt the butter, sugar, and cinnamon powder, coating the bread pieces evenly, much like seasoning popcorn. Give it a gentle shake until everything is well combined.

Step 7

Step 8

Ta-da! Your delicious bread rusks are ready. Freshly made, they offer an irresistible combination of buttery richness, sweet sugar, and a delicate cinnamon aroma. The texture is wonderfully crisp yet melts in your mouth. Serve them with a warm glass of milk as a nutritious snack for children, or pair them with a cold beer for an excellent adult appetizer. This is a magical recipe to transform leftover bread into a fantastic treat!
