Baek Jong-won’s Oil Tteokbokki: The Perfect Beer Snack!
A simple and easy recipe that’s perfect as a beer snack, made quickly with ingredients you likely have at home.
Main Ingredients- 2 cups Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
- 1/4 stalk Green onion
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all your ingredients. Rinse the rice cakes under cold or lukewarm water to enhance their chewy texture, and finely chop the green onion.
Step 2
In a bowl, combine 2.5 tablespoons of gochugaru, 1.5 tablespoons of sugar, 1.5 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, and 3 tablespoons of cooking oil to create the seasoning sauce. Using a generous amount of cooking oil here will make the rice cakes moist and tender. It will feel like half of the oil tteokbokki is already made!
Step 3
Wash the tteokbokki rice cakes thoroughly under running water, separating any pieces that are stuck together. It’s crucial to thoroughly pat dry the rice cakes with paper towels; this prevents them from sticking together during cooking and ensures the sauce coats them well. Once dried, add the rice cakes to the seasoning sauce and mix evenly with your hands or a spatula. Make sure the gochugaru-based sauce coats every piece of rice cake. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Step 4
Now it’s time to cook the seasoned rice cakes in a pan. Heat a pan and add the coated rice cakes. Spread them out in a single layer, ensuring they don’t overlap, so they cook evenly and the sauce doesn’t burn. The key is to cook them slowly over low heat. Keep the heat as low as possible, and stir gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking and that the sauce thickens, until the rice cakes are lightly browned.
Step 5
Your delicious Baek Jong-won-style oil tteokbokki is ready! This recipe is so simple that anyone can easily follow it. Sprinkle with sesame seeds at the end for an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal.
