Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Tofu (approx. 300g)
  • 1/4 Onion (approx. 50g)
  • A small amount of Green Onion (approx. 1/4 stalk)

Cooking Instructions

First, prepare all your ingredients. Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes, about 1.5-2cm thick. Thinly slice the onion and chop the green onion into bite-sized pieces, either crosswise or diagonally.

Line the bottom of a thick-bottomed pot with the sliced onions. This prevents the stew from sticking to the bottom and adds a subtle sweetness.

Gently arrange the cubed tofu on top of the onions, making sure not to overlap the pieces too much. Arranging it neatly will make the stew look even more appealing.

Now, it’s time to add the seasonings for the stew’s flavor. Pour 2 cups (400ml) of water into the pot. Add 1 Tbsp of gochugaru, 3 Tbsp of soy sauce (or Yeondu), 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic, and the star of this stew, 2 Tbsp of perilla oil. Add them all at once.

Finally, top the tofu with the chopped green onions. Place the pot over high heat and cover it with a lid. Let it come to a rolling boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld beautifully.

When the broth has slightly reduced and the tofu has absorbed the flavors, turn off the heat. Finish with a sprinkle of black pepper for extra aroma. Your delicious Perilla Oil Tofu Stew is ready! Enjoy it with a hot bowl of rice. It’s incredibly simple, but you’ll be amazed by its deep flavor!
