Main Ingredients

  • 1 serving Five-color somen noodles
  • 1 well-cooked egg

Dressing

  • 2 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 0.5 Tbsp Oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Brown sugar
  • 0.5 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Vinegar (rice vinegar recommended)
  • 1 Tbsp Perilla oil (or sesame oil)
  • 1 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds (crushed)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Bring a generous amount of water to a rolling boil in a large pot – about 5 times the volume of the noodles. Add the five-color somen noodles and cook for about 1 minute and 30 seconds. Once the noodles float to the surface, add about 1 cup of cold water, and once it reboils, turn off the heat. Immediately drain the cooked noodles and rinse them thoroughly under cold running water to remove excess starch. Drain them well in a colander until completely dry. Cook each color of somen noodles separately using the same method to prevent the colors from mixing.

Step 1

Step 2

Artfully arrange the prepared five-color somen noodles in a serving bowl. The vibrant colors are already enticing, aren’t they? Stack them up in a visually appealing way.

Step 2

Step 3

Place the well-cooked egg in the center of the noodles. Using a wavy-edge knife can create a more decorative presentation. Slice the egg beautifully and place it gently in the middle to enhance the overall appeal.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s make the delicious dressing. In a bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 0.5 tablespoon of oyster sauce, and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar. The oyster sauce will significantly boost the umami flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

Add 0.5 tablespoon of minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of fragrant perilla oil, and 1 tablespoon of crushed toasted sesame seeds. Finally, stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar for a refreshing tang. Whisk everything together thoroughly with chopsticks or a whisk until the brown sugar is completely dissolved. Ensure all ingredients are well incorporated to create a flavorful dressing.

Step 5

Step 6

Serve the completed Five-Color Soy Sauce Noodles with the freshly made dressing on the side. This makes for a fantastic meal! Pour a generous amount of the dressing over the noodles right before eating and mix well to fully enjoy the diverse colors and rich, savory flavors. Enjoy your meal!
