Essential Ingredients- 2 blocks of silken tofu
- 3 strips of thick-cut bacon
- 1/2 fresh onion
- 200g pasta sauce of your choice (Arrabiata recommended)
- 1 cup of flavorful mozzarella cheese
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, chop the bacon into bite-sized pieces, about 1cm in width. Peel and finely dice the onion; this will help it meld better with the sauce.
Step 2
For this recipe, we used ‘Fontana Sicily Peperoncino Arrabiata Sauce’ for its appealing spicy kick. Feel free to use your favorite pasta sauce. If you prefer a spicy flavor, go for a peperoncino sauce; if you like it milder, a classic tomato sauce would be great.
Step 3
Prepare two blocks of soft tofu (the kind typically used for stews). Gently pat them dry with paper towels for a better texture.
Step 4
Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon and diced onion, and sauté until they are nicely browned and fragrant. The rendered bacon fat and the sweetness of the onion will add wonderful depth of flavor.
Step 5
Place the two blocks of soft tofu into an oven-safe dish with some depth. Using a spoon, gently break the tofu into large, rustic chunks. Avoid mashing it too finely, as this can diminish the wonderfully soft texture characteristic of silken tofu.
Step 6
Evenly distribute the sautéed bacon and onion mixture over the broken tofu. The savory bacon and sweet onion will create a fantastic harmony with the soft tofu.
Step 7
Pour the pasta sauce generously over the bacon and onion layer. You can adjust the amount of sauce according to your personal preference.
Step 8
Now for the star of the show! Generously cover the tofu and sauce with mozzarella cheese. As the cheese melts, it will beautifully bind all the ingredients together.
Step 9
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 15 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is melted and golden brown. Oven temperatures can vary, so adjust the time as needed. If using an air fryer, you can bake at 180°C for 10-12 minutes.
Step 10
Once the cheese is beautifully golden and bubbly, carefully remove the gratin from the oven and serve immediately while hot. Behold, the incredibly delicious Tofu Cheese Gratin, featuring the perfect combination of silky tofu and stretchy, melted cheese! Isn’t it wonderful?
