Ingredients

  • 1/4 Onion
  • 1 Bell Pepper (any color)
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1 pinch Black Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Honey
  • 1 Tbsp Vinegar

Begin by thinly slicing 1/4 of an onion into strips. Slicing them as thinly as possible will help reduce their sharpness.

Place the sliced onion in a bowl of cold water and let it soak for about 10 minutes. This process removes the pungent flavor and enhances the onion’s crisp texture.

Wash one bell pepper thoroughly. After washing, pat it completely dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth. Ensuring the pepper is dry will prevent oil splattering when roasting.

Hold the dried bell pepper directly over a gas burner flame (using tongs for safety). Rotate it continuously until the skin is charred black all over. This roasting process imparts a wonderful smoky flavor and intensifies the natural sweetness of the bell pepper.

Once the bell pepper is nicely roasted with charred skin, immediately transfer it to a clean plate or bowl.

Peeling the bell pepper while it’s still warm is the easiest method. You can place it in a plastic bag for a few minutes to steam, which loosens the skin, or rinse it under cold water as you peel. If the skin is stubborn, gently scrape it off with a knife.

After peeling, cut the bell pepper in half. Remove the seeds and the white pith from the inside. Then, slice the pepper into thin strips, similar to how you prepared the onion.

Drain the soaked onion slices, squeezing out any excess water with your hands. The crisp onion will provide a lovely textural contrast to the soft roasted bell pepper.

In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to create the dressing. Add a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper to season.
