Spicy and Sweet Stir-fried Sundae: The Ultimate Recipe

Hello everyone, it’s Superpower! Today, I made stir-fried sundae. I used sundae purchased from the mart, and made the sauce myself using gochujang (red chili paste), gochugaru (red chili powder), and other ingredients. I also added about 1 tablespoon each of perilla seed powder and curry powder; feel free to omit these if you don’t have them. Now, let’s begin making stir-fried sundae!

  • Occasion : Bar food
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 500g Sundae (Korean blood sausage, mart-bought)
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1/4 Carrot
  • 1 Green onion
  • 5-6 Cabbage leaves
  • 10 Perilla leaves
  • 1 Red chili pepper
  • 1 Green chili pepper
  • Cooking oil, as needed
  • Sesame oil, as needed
  • Toasted sesame seeds, as needed

Sauce

  • 4 cloves Garlic, minced
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean red chili powder)
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Perilla seed powder
  • 0.5 Tbsp Curry powder (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare all your ingredients before you start cooking. You’ll need: 1/2 onion, 1/4 carrot, 1 green onion, 5-6 cabbage leaves, 10 perilla leaves, 4 cloves of garlic, 1 green chili pepper, and 1 red chili pepper.

Step 1

Step 2

Chop all the vegetables into bite-sized pieces. Slice the onion about 0.5 cm thick. Cut the carrot into similar thickness slices. Chop the green onion into 3-5 cm lengths, and if they are thick, cut them in half lengthwise. Tear or chop the cabbage leaves and perilla leaves into manageable pieces. Mince the garlic finely, and thinly slice the chili peppers. Having everything prepped makes cooking much smoother!

Step 2

Step 3

Prepare 500g of sundae. If you’re using store-bought sundae, open the package and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Avoid cutting them too small, as they can break apart during cooking; aim for pieces about 2-3 cm in size.

Step 3

Step 4

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a wok or a deep pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add the cabbage, onion, and carrot. Stir-fry until the vegetables start to soften and release some moisture.

Step 4

Step 5

When the vegetables are slightly translucent and have wilted a bit, add the cut sundae to the pan. Stir-fry briefly before adding the sauce to prevent the sundae from sticking to the pan.

Step 5

Step 6

Now it’s time for the delicious sauce! Sprinkle in some black pepper. Add 1.5 tablespoons of gochugaru, 0.5 tablespoon of curry powder (this adds extra flavor but is optional), 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of perilla seed powder, the minced garlic, 1 tablespoon of gochujang, 2 tablespoons of mirin, and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Stir everything together well, coating the sundae and vegetables evenly.

Step 6

Step 7

Continue to stir-fry until the sundae is fully cooked. It should look plump and slightly shiny. It’s best to cook over medium heat to prevent the sauce from burning.

Step 7

Step 8

Once the sundae is cooked, add the perilla leaves, green onions, and sliced chili peppers. Stir-fry quickly, just until the vegetables are slightly wilted but still retain some crispness. This helps maintain their fresh color and texture.

Step 8

Step 9

Turn off the heat. Drizzle in a little sesame oil. Without turning the heat back on, gently toss the stir-fry to distribute the sesame oil and its fragrance throughout the dish.

Step 9

Step 10

Transfer the delicious stir-fried sundae to a serving plate. Finish with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds for an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal!

Step 10

Step 11

Your spicy, sweet, and chewy stir-fried sundae is ready! Enjoy a fantastic homemade dish that’s perfect as a side for rice or as a delicious snack with drinks.
