Pretty Egg Flower Omurice
A Healing Omurice Recipe with Beautiful Egg Flowers for Eyes and Mouth to Enjoy
While pondering what to make for lunch with my daughter, I decided to make a special omurice using the fresh, organic eggs we had. The egg flowers blooming on top of the fried rice make it a joy to behold. This flower omurice recipe is a feast for both the eyes and the palate, especially when paired with a spicy and sweet Sriracha sauce that can melt away stress. It’s a hearty meal that’s perfect for everyday dining or special occasions.
Ingredients (Serves 2)- 1 bowl of cooked rice
- 1/3 yellow bell pepper
- 1/3 red bell pepper
- 1/5 carrot
- 1/3 onion
- 6 fresh organic eggs
- 5 Vienna sausages
- 2-3 pinches of salt
- Cooking oil (for frying and omelet)
- 5 stalks of chives or green onions
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Feel free to use up any leftover vegetables in your refrigerator for a more abundant fried rice. First, wash and finely dice the onion, yellow bell pepper, red bell pepper, and carrot. Finely dicing the vegetables ensures they mix well with the rice.
Step 2
For a better texture, slice the Vienna sausages into slightly larger pieces than bite-sized. Small Vienna sausages can be added whole. You can also add other ingredients like ham or bacon according to your preference.
Step 3
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add all the diced onion, bell peppers, carrot, and Vienna sausages, and stir-fry. Continue to cook until the delicious aroma of the ingredients is released.
Step 4
The key is to stir-fry quickly until the vegetables are slightly cooked and still have a crisp texture, and the vibrant colors of the bell peppers remain. Be careful not to overcook, as the vegetables can become mushy.
Step 5
Now, add the cooked rice and about 2-3 pinches of salt. Use a spatula to break up any clumps of rice and mix thoroughly with the other ingredients. (Tip: If you usually eat multi-grain rice, you can use it instead of white rice, but white rice will give a prettier color to the fried rice. Using leftover rice will make the fried rice even fluffier.)
Step 6
Once the fried rice is fully cooked, turn off the heat. Add the finely chopped chives or green onions and mix well. Chives are optional, but they add a fresh color and enhanced flavor. You can omit them if you don’t have them.
Step 7
This step is for making a soft egg omelet. Crack the 6 fresh eggs into a bowl, whisk them thoroughly, and then strain them through a fine sieve. This removes any lumps of egg white or bits of yolk membrane, resulting in a much smoother and finer omelet.
Step 8
Heat a pan over medium-low heat and lightly coat it with oil. Ladle about one ladleful of the egg mixture into the pan and cook it into a thin, round omelet. Cooking slowly over low heat prevents burning and ensures a beautiful color.
Step 9
You’ll need to make several round omelets, which can be a bit time-consuming, but making them is not difficult. Don’t worry too much about perfect size or shape; just aim for round ones. Make about 10-12 omelets.
Step 10
It’s time to shape the omurice. Arrange the fried rice on a plate in a donut shape, creating a hollow in the center. This space will be perfect for placing the egg flowers.
Step 11
Overlap the cooked egg omelets and carefully layer them around the fried rice to cover it. Letting the edges of the omelets extend slightly outwards can create a more generous appearance.
Step 12
Meticulously cover the center hollow with more egg omelets, ensuring no rice is visible. Completely encase the rice.
Step 13
Now, let’s create the flower shape. Place 5-6 egg omelets on a cutting board, overlap them, and roll them up tightly like making a sushi roll. The finished flower can be cut in half lengthwise and placed on each plate, or one whole flower can be used as a decoration.
Step 14
And here it is – the visually stunning Egg Flower Omurice! Without any special sauce, it can be enjoyed with Sriracha sauce for a spicy kick. Of course, serving it with a homemade, moist omurice sauce, or drizzling it with ketchup and mayonnaise artistically, is also delicious. Enjoy your meal!
