Ingredients for Tacos- Fresh or thawed frozen shrimp, 1 serving (approx. 100-150g)
- Salt, 2 tsp
- Coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
- Cumin powder, 1 tsp (or substitute with curry powder, 1 tsp)
- Butter, 1 Tbsp
- Olive oil, a drizzle
- Garlic, 1-2 cloves, minced
- Tortillas (corn or flour), 1-2
- Fresh basil leaves, a few (optional)
- Lemon, 1/4
- Red pepper flakes or paprika, a pinch (for a touch of heat, optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by rinsing the shrimp and patting them thoroughly dry. If using frozen shrimp, thaw them in cold water and then ensure they are completely dry, as excess moisture can affect the cooking. Finely mince the garlic.
Step 2
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and a drizzle of olive oil. Once the butter is melted and fragrant, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until aromatic. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
Step 3
Add the prepared shrimp to the skillet. Sprinkle with 2 tsp of salt. Cook the shrimp for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until they turn pink and opaque.
Step 4
For a hint of spice, sprinkle in red pepper flakes or paprika at this stage, according to your preference. A generous sprinkle makes the dish visually appealing.
Step 5
Grind some black pepper over the shrimp and add 1 tsp of cumin powder for an earthy, exotic flavor. If you don’t have cumin, curry powder is a great substitute that yields delicious results. Stir everything together and cook for another minute.
Step 6
While the shrimp is cooking, heat another dry skillet over medium heat. Place the tortillas in the hot pan and toast them for about 30 seconds to 1 minute per side, until they are lightly golden and slightly crispy. This step ensures a nice texture for your tacos.
Step 7
Assemble your tacos by placing the cooked shrimp mixture onto the warm tortillas. If you have fresh basil leaves, chop them or place them whole on top for a burst of freshness and color. This is optional but highly recommended.
Step 8
For the final touch, finely zest the lemon peel directly over the tacos. This citrus zest adds a wonderful fragrant aroma and brightens up the flavors of the shrimp. Your elegant shrimp tacos are now ready to be served – a perfect dish for guests or a special treat!
