I’m a dessert lover living alone. I tried making super simple sweet potato sticks using my air fryer. These are incredibly easy to make and result in a delightful snack with a crispy exterior and chewy interior, perfect for cozy winter days. Enjoy the satisfaction of homemade treats!

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 5g cooking oil (about 1/2 Tbsp)
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Peel the sweet potatoes thoroughly using a peeler or a knife. Peeling makes them easier to cut into sticks and more pleasant to eat.

Cut the peeled sweet potatoes into thin stick shapes. Aim for a uniform thickness of about 0.5cm to 1cm so they cook evenly. If they are too thick, they will take longer to cook through.

Now, let’s remove the excess starch. Soak the sweet potato sticks in cold water and change the water until it runs clear. This process helps them become crispier. (Soaking for about 10 minutes is recommended.)

It’s crucial to thoroughly dry the sweet potato sticks after draining them. Use paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth to pat them completely dry. If moisture remains, they will steam rather than fry, making it difficult to achieve a crispy texture.

Place the dried sweet potato sticks into a zip-top bag or a large bowl. Drizzle about 3-4 times with cooking oil (approximately 1/2 Tbsp) and coat the sticks evenly. If you’d like a hint of savory flavor, add a pinch of salt and mix. Gently shake or toss the bag to ensure the oil coats every piece. This step is key for achieving that perfect crispiness in the air fryer.

Finally, place the coated sweet potato sticks in your preheated air fryer basket, ensuring they are in a single layer and not overcrowded. Air fry at 180°C (356°F) for 10 to 15 minutes. Flipping them halfway through will ensure even browning and crispiness. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning, and once they are golden brown, your delicious sweet potato sticks are ready to enjoy!
