Main Ingredients

  • 4 sheets of fish cake (eomuk, approx. 200g)
  • 3 Korean chili peppers (gochu, adjust to spice preference)

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp corn syrup or oligosaccharide
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Pinch of sesame seeds
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, slice the fish cakes into long, bite-sized strips. Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced fish cakes and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir-fry until the fish cakes become tender and slightly golden brown. Adding sugar first helps to coat the fish cakes and enhance their flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the fish cakes are about half cooked and soft, add the Korean chili peppers, sliced diagonally. Continue to stir-fry. The chili peppers will impart a pleasant spiciness to the fish cakes, making them even more delicious. If you prefer less heat, you can reduce the number of chili peppers or substitute with regular red bell peppers.

Step 2

Step 3

Now it’s time to add the seasonings. Create a small space in the center of the pan and pour in 3 tablespoons of soy sauce. Let the soy sauce sizzle and slightly caramelize for a moment before mixing it with the fish cakes and stir-frying everything together. This method allows the soy sauce to develop a deeper, richer flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Finally, add 3 tablespoons of gochugaru (Korean chili powder), 1 tablespoon of corn syrup or oligosaccharide, and a pinch of black pepper. Stir-fry for another minute until all the ingredients are well coated with the sauce. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Your delicious spicy and sweet stir-fried fish cakes are ready! This dish is a fantastic side for warm rice and is also great for lunchboxes as it tastes good even when cold.
