Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 block of firm tofu (approx. 150-200g)
  • 1/4 stalk of green onion
  • A little grapeseed oil or cooking oil

Braised Tofu Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (Korean soup soy sauce or regular)
  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes; increase to 1.5 Tbsp for more heat)
  • 1/2 Tbsp oligosaccharide or corn syrup (for shine and sweetness)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced green onion (white parts preferred)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/3 cup water (approx. 60ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Gently press the tofu with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Slice it into about 1cm thick pieces. Heat 1-2 Tbsp of grapeseed oil in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Pan-fry the tofu slices until golden brown on both sides. This step helps the tofu hold its shape and adds a wonderful nutty flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Finely chop the green onion. You can use both the white and green parts for a nice color and fresh aroma.

Step 2

Step 3

In a small bowl, combine all the braised tofu sauce ingredients: soy sauce, gochugaru, oligosaccharide, minced green onion, minced garlic, sesame oil, sugar, sesame seeds, and water. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce is nicely blended.

Step 3

Step 4

Push the pan-fried tofu to one side of the pan, or transfer it to a plate. Pour the prepared braising sauce evenly over the tofu.

Step 4

Step 5

Sprinkle the chopped green onions generously over the tofu and sauce. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and coat the tofu. Covering the pan during this step helps the flavors meld beautifully.

Step 5

Step 6

The dish is ready when the sauce has thickened and is coating the tofu nicely, releasing a delicious aroma! Enjoy it hot, or let it cool slightly for the flavors to deepen even further. Serve with freshly steamed rice for a satisfying and comforting meal.
