Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly by soaking them in water and shaking them gently. This step is key to ensuring they are crisp and free of any unpleasant odor.
Step 2
Chop all the prepared ingredients into large, bite-sized pieces. Slice the onion into strips and the green onion diagonally.
Step 3
Wash the squid thoroughly. For an even better texture and cleaner taste, rub them with coarse salt before rinsing. Then, cut the squid into pieces similar in size to the other ingredients.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp sugar, 5 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp mirin, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp fish sauce, and 2 Tbsp minced garlic. Mix well until everything is evenly combined. This will create a deep, savory flavor.
Step 5
In a wide pan or wok, start by placing the clean bean sprouts at the bottom. Then, arrange the sliced onion, squid, and fish cakes on top. Finally, generously drizzle the prepared sauce over everything.
Step 6
Now, turn the heat to high and bring it to a boil. Once the bean sprouts release their moisture and begin to cook, stir everything gently with a spatula for about 2 to 3 minutes, ensuring the ingredients are evenly coated with the sauce. Be careful not to burn it!
Step 7
When the bean sprouts have wilted slightly but still retain a bit of their crispness, add the chopped green onions, red chili, and green chili peppers. This will add a wonderful spicy aroma and vibrant colors, making the dish even more appealing. Continue to stir-fry for another 2 to 3 minutes.
Step 8
Lastly, in a small bowl, whisk together 1 Tbsp cornstarch and 3 Tbsp water until smooth. Pour this starch slurry into the pan. Stir quickly to prevent lumps and allow the sauce to thicken, coating the ingredients beautifully.
Step 9
Turn off the heat and drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil. The subtle aroma of sesame oil will enhance the overall flavor of the dish.
Step 10
Finally, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for a finishing touch. Your delicious, spicy, and sweet steamed squid with bean sprouts is ready! It’s also incredibly tasty served over a bowl of warm rice.
