Steamed Radish and Bean Sprout Namul

This is a simple and wholesome side dish, just like the ones my mom used to make. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy both radish and bean sprouts simultaneously, and I highly recommend it for its ease and delightful flavor. Perfect for any meal!

Recipe Info

  • Category : Side dish
  • Ingredient Category : Vegetables
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Steamed
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Korean radish (approx. 200-300g)
  • 250g bean sprouts
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp salt (or soy sauce, adjust to taste)
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the radish by peeling half of it. Slice it thinly into matchsticks. Thinner slices will absorb seasoning better and cook faster. Heat a concave pan over medium-low heat, add 1 Tbsp of sesame oil, and sauté the julienned radish for about 1 minute. This process helps to release some moisture from the radish, enhancing its fresh flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Wash the bean sprouts thoroughly under running water. Remove any husks or blemishes. Arrange the cleaned bean sprouts on top of the sautéed radish. Sprinkle 1/2 Tbsp of salt evenly over the bean sprouts for seasoning. You can adjust the amount of salt to your preference.

Step 2

Step 3

Cover the pan tightly with a lid. Reduce the heat to low and steam for about 10 minutes. During this time, the moisture released from the bean sprouts and radish will cook them gently, allowing their flavors to meld together. Be careful not to overcook the bean sprouts.

Step 3

Step 4

After 10 minutes, carefully lift the lid. Check if the bean sprouts and radish are tender. Using chopsticks or tongs, gently mix the ingredients together, being careful not to mash them. Taste and add more salt or soy sauce if needed. The vegetables should be tender yet retain a slight crispness.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, sprinkle a pinch of toasted sesame seeds over the finished radish and bean sprout namul as a garnish. The nutty aroma of the sesame seeds will enhance the overall flavor and visual appeal. This creates a clean and delicious side dish, perfect for festive occasions or as a healthy accompaniment to any meal.
