Chuseok Recommended Shrimp Pancake Ingredients

  • 5 fresh shrimp
  • 2 fresh eggs
  • 1 cup flour (approx. 100g) or tempura powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Skewers (as many as the number of shrimp you plan to make)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare your fresh shrimp. Peel them, remove the devein from the back, and rinse under cold water. It’s crucial to pat the shrimp thoroughly dry with paper towels. This step ensures the batter adheres well and results in a crispier pancake.

Step 1

Step 2

Season the dried shrimp by sprinkling a pinch of salt and pepper on both sides. Let them marinate for at least 5 minutes to enhance their natural flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Cut the seasoned shrimp in half horizontally. This makes it easier to form a natural and beautiful heart shape when assembling.

Step 3

Step 4

Gently bend the head portion of each shrimp towards the tail to create a heart shape. Thread the shrimp onto the skewers in a body-tail-body sequence to secure the heart form. Handle the shrimp delicately to prevent them from breaking.

Step 4

Step 5

Evenly coat the heart-shaped shrimp with flour (or tempura powder) on all sides. Gently shake the skewers to ensure the flour is distributed uniformly.

Step 5

Step 6

In a separate bowl, whisk the 2 eggs to create an egg wash. Dip the floured shrimp into the egg wash, ensuring they are fully coated. Make sure the egg wash adheres well to the shrimp.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Place the egg-coated shrimp into the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides. Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side. This method results in a juicy interior and a crispy exterior. Enjoy your delicious heart-shaped shrimp pancakes that will add a special touch to your holiday feast!
