Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s get started preparing the ingredients for this delicious steamed egg. Feel free to use any leftover vegetables you have in your fridge for the extra ingredients!
Step 2
First, finely chop 1 slice of bacon into small pieces, about 0.5 cm thick. The bacon will add a wonderful umami flavor to the steamed egg.
Step 3
Finely mince the Korean green chili pepper and red chili pepper (optional) after removing the seeds. If you like a little spice, use the green chili pepper; if you want to add color, use the red chili pepper.
Step 4
Chop 1 stalk of green onion into small pieces, using both the white and green parts. Finely chopped green onions will add a subtle aroma and texture to the steamed egg.
Step 5
Julienne 1/3 carrot and then chop it finely. Carrots not only add a beautiful color but are also rich in vitamins.
Step 6
Crack 5 large eggs into a clean bowl. Use a fork to whisk them thoroughly until the yolks and whites are well combined. This step also helps to eliminate any eggy smell.
Step 7
Add 1 tablespoon of cooking wine to the beaten eggs. Cooking wine helps to remove any unpleasant smell from the eggs and enhances their flavor.
Step 8
Pour 1 cup of the prepared dashi broth into the egg mixture. (For dashi broth, you can steep dried kelp in cold water for about 10 minutes, or simply use store-bought broth for convenience.)
Step 9
Now, add all the prepared chopped vegetables (onion, bacon, mushroom, carrot, green onion, chili pepper) to the egg mixture. Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt and 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil. (Optional: you can add a dash of black pepper or 1/3 tablespoon of sugar for a touch of sweetness.) Stir everything together gently to combine.
Step 10
Heat a pot or deep pan over low heat. Add about half a tablespoon of sesame oil and swirl it around to coat the bottom. This will help the steamed egg release easily later.
Step 11
Pour the prepared egg mixture into the heated pot/pan. Gently swirl the pot to ensure the egg mixture spreads evenly. Then, reduce the heat to the lowest setting and let it cook slowly for about 20 minutes.
Step 12
Cover with a lid and cook over low heat. This slow cooking method allows the inside of the steamed egg to cook through gently, retaining moisture for a wonderfully soft texture. Let it steam undisturbed.
Step 13
After about 20 minutes, lift the lid and check if the steamed egg is cooked. The top might look set, but the inside should still be moist.
Step 14
Insert a chopstick into the center of the steamed egg. If it comes out clean or with no liquid egg attached, it’s perfectly cooked. If it seems undercooked, cover it again and cook for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 15
Once the steamed egg is fully cooked, turn off the heat and let it rest for a few minutes to steam further. (This step is inclusive of any additional cooking time from step 13.)
Step 16
Your delicious and soft steamed egg with vegetables is ready! Finish by sprinkling some toasted sesame seeds on top. They add a lovely visual appeal and nutty flavor.
Step 17
If the steamed egg seems to be sticking to the sides of the pot or pan, gently loosen it with a spatula. Drizzling a little sesame oil around the edges will make it much easier to separate.
Step 18
Carefully invert the cooked steamed egg onto a serving plate. Thanks to the sesame oil, it should release cleanly.
Step 19
This looks just like the steamed egg you might have enjoyed in school cafeterias – perfectly steamed right in the pot!
Step 20
Slice the steamed egg into bite-sized pieces and enjoy it with a warm bowl of rice. It’s a wonderful side dish for kids and a great accompaniment to drinks.
Step 21
Enjoy this thick, hearty, and nutritious steamed egg that simply melts in your mouth!
